2-0-1-6 resolution

2015 was a blast. It's amazing and passed like a blink. I learned a lot, read a lot (and still a lot more !), tried an app that scared me a lot !met a lot of new good amazing people : patients, friends, colleagues.... I didn't travel as much as previous year, but still.... it was awesome.

So here comes the list for 2016 resolution !
1. Exploring Indonesia even more !
I'm not a globetrotter. But I should land my legs to at least 5 different cities in Indonesia this year ! (and Jakarta is not counted, since I travel back and forth there like.....endlessly).

2. Learn Spanish !
Well, I'm not too old to learn a new language. At least, before I hit 30 yrs old, I can greet my patients in 5 languages : Indonesia, English, Chinese, French, and Spanish.

3. Live my life !
Do yoga, and read more. 1 book per month. I should make myself proud since I haven't finished any single books last year due my lame excuse : too busy. Oh, and I should write more.

4. Learn to dance !
This is also in my list. I should learn to dance, babyyyyyyy....

5. Diamond invisalign provider
I hit platinum elite this year with 300 live-ongoing cases. And as I'm still young and eager to study lots, I should learn more to gain more cases this year. Am I too much if I put 'selfpride-achievement' as my reason to do this ?

So, 2016, I will fight to live my life to the fullest with full spirit ! And everytime I feel down, I will re-read my list.

PS : And I should wise enough to be more selective. Note to myself that I don't need to be TOO kind to people who don't worth my kindness ;)

never argue (with an idiot)

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

And completely waste your time (and energy too)

Agree?

from shanghai with love

Quick post from Shanghai Dentech 2015. I don't recommend any cheap stuffs in hall 2. Especially Dental Life Sciences products. For your patients, just go to a good quality composites. I purchased this brand a lot last year -expected too much from this brand because of their sweet marketing talk. I end up using all of them to mock up and posterior bite risers. In end, no any syringes that I use to cavity filling. Because its all oily and after curing, it will turn out very bulky. Oh and I don't recommend their colour composites too. The worst ever. I prefer to go back to twinkle star from voco as this one is still my best. This DLS is in hall 2. Dont get tricked by their marketing. He has the sweetest talk ever. Just felt surprised this year they still have a booth there. I think they bankrupt already because of the poor quality hahaha

So far, 3M, tokuyama and voco are all standing-applause composites. For the strength and esthetic too. My advice is, never lower your composite standard with cheaper one. Because your patients consents should be your consideration.

Love you, Shanghai !!

sawadeeka!

Had a wonderful peer to peer invisalign study group with an old friend of mine - dr. Thiti from Bangkok. I supposed to visit his clinic in Bangkok when I went there for G6 launching, but he was on holiday (as always!! He even wondered why I always make a lecture trip and not a holiday trip). Thank you for visiting my clinic! We had a tough discussion about some class III cases and it was fun!

Had a good time with Ivan and Eliz also. Thanks a lot for visiting me. See you again in Bangkok !

good morning, jakarta!

I rarely stay overnight in Jakarta. I avoided it if I could -due the massive traffic jam that can freak me out hahaha....  but this time i can't resist to stay overnight, taking a short escape to visit my friends' clinics here.

Yesterday I was attending Sam Daher's lecture. It was an awesome one! And yes, I gathered again with my love-to-study-to-the-bits fellows : dr. Ade and dr. Hilly

And guess what.... for the first time in our life we captured a shameless picture in front of Welcome Monument in bundaran HI Jakarta. Just above the flyover Thamrin. Hahahahahaha we put down our professional image by this picture !!!

Finally I visit Dr. Hilly's place in HDS Kemang. A very nice place. Together with Angelo, the new invisalign qsouth east asia manager.

Thanks a lot for your hospitality,  dr. Hilly. A pleasant trip in your clinic. Many times I fly to Jakarta for lectures, but finally this time I can make it. Yaaaaayyy !!!!

Pardon my selfie. But i really love my new smile. It improves a lot with invisalign !!!

dental assistants

If you are a dentist, and you are a clinic owner, more-likely you will struggle with your human resources : associates, dental hygienists, dental assistants, receptionists, helpers, etc. You will squeeze your brain out on HOW to manage them to make sure that they will fulfill your clinic's standard.

And believe me, struggling with Indonesian dental assistants is a nightmare. Especially if she is someone whom you picked up randomly from the street. I mean : no any dental assistant's educational background.
YOU
WILL
SUFFER
EVEN
MORE

One day I ever trained 3 new assistants. 1 candidate fainted after 5 patients in a row. 1 candidate didn't show up in next day without any further explanation. And another candidate gave me a call. Apologized that she didn't want to take this job with the most ridiculous reason I ever heard : "Doc, I can't stand on seeing saliva. For me, it's disgusting."
Oh, alright.... good to know. Because sometimes you will see blood too !

Well, it's just a clinical problem. Further more, I have to teach them too to :
1. Greet my patients. Friendly, nice, polite, and not too much.
2. Dress up. And put some make up. And to updo their hair.
3. To work fast. I just can't stand on slow people. Idiot will make it even worse.
4. Use smartphone. Nowadays, my patients are all smartphone-users. And it's more convenient to remind them through whatsapp / line / viber / email instead of giving them a shocking call while they were having an important meeting -let's said.
5. To schedule my patients -which is a very very tough thing to do. I train them to simulate and simulate everything related on scheduling appointment. Because it's the hardest. They know that I don't like if I must do 5 consultations in a row, or 3 surgeries in a row, etc.
6. To speak in english. And some patients are speaking chinese.

For these reasons, I prefer to hire someone who can fulfill my standard. And it's so hard to find in Indonesia. Especially if you must struggle with local human resources who have no ambitions. Haha, but my Singaporean, Malay, Thai, and Viet colleagues are also sighing the same thing about their assistants too. Same problems in every south east asia countries. Once we ever talked about it and we couldn't stop laughing on how desperate Phuong -one of my colleague from Vietnam-. He wanted to hire anyone except Viets because he couldn't tolerate the idiot level of his locals anymore.

"She cleaned impregum that hadn't set yet with my saliva ejector and it blocked off my dental unit."
"She scheduled a child patient with no emergency issue at 10.30pm."
"She gave a reminder call to my patient at 11pm for next week appointment. 3 times in a row !"

Alright, I agree. This one was awesomely idiot. You should kick her out, Phuong !

My senior assistants are good. Now. Ya, now I can sleep well because they can manage my schedule much way better. But I also found hard times too during their first year. Training someone who is totally blind in dentistry is a real tough job. They also can train my newbies now which can save up my time and energy.

But I had invested a lot of mind and energy previously. And it's not easy. Even until today, teaching them to speak in english fluently can me scratch my own skins. But I think, as long as they have a strong willing to learn and still in the tolerable level of idiotness, you can manage to train them.

And don't forget to give them rewards too. I make a routine appreciation team gathering twice in year  so they won't curse you as an evil boss.  Having holiday together with your team is important. Be a wise leader, life is short !

jakarta lecture confirmed

Jakarta lecture confirmed and I will prepare some of my difficult cases for that advanced lecture.

I can't wait!!!!!

First time after a year I will extend my visit for fun. So after lecture, I plan to visit several friends' clinics as they had invited me to drop by. And my lovely Elizt will assist me for cafe tour during my visit. Isn't it lovely???

The book has done!!!! Thanks for AZ and vietbitch for keep inspiring me. In summary, I write about relationship between men and women. I wish both of them can get a good psychiatrist in Vietnam so they wont get so obsessed on stalking me all the time. Ha! They're really my number #1 fans -so lovely, isn't it?

Let me read this out loud for you!

Girls, if someone leave you for someone else - believe me, he doesn't worth every single pieces of your heart, he's not worth your attention, or any feeling left. You can spread your wings and fly. Just like me, I raise up my carreer and I will publish my book. Yaaaayyyyy!!!!

And i will put my picture in the cover ! Full credit to Elise, my talented photographer. She nailed it!

No way. Hahaha.....

But I love my new smile. And I consider to put this photo in japanese smile charity day which will be held by one of my best friends next month! Kawaii desu-ka!

8 months with invisalign

So this is my current progress. 8 months with invisalign. Left one was me before. I am fully satisfied with the result. Now I'm working with my class II elastics and if you see carefully,  I have improved my upper lip now.

Ah yes, I was so ugly before ! My retroclined upper lip made me looked realllllllly old. Now, my upper lip muscle won't work so hard when I smile. See how fantastic this appliance and I wish I had started this treatment much much way earlier !

PS : if my ex saw this progress picture, I believe he will regret that he left me broken hearted before :))

PPS : i'm just kidding :p

just extract this d*mn tooth !

So yesterday, a senior chinese couple walked in to my clinic. They lady has become my patient already for several years. She accompanied her husband whom I have never treated before.

I will write in different posting on how you can manage chinese patients (chinese means : a really traditional chinese one - who will never even say hello to you until one day all the teeth are shaking and ready to be extracted are having some problems.

Once he stepped in, he mentioned out loud already : "i want you to extract this tooth. Its shaking."
He pointed on lower left canine. It got 3' mobility. Easy peasy case. But....

As a normal procedure, I recommend him to check for everything first : sugar blood, blood pressure, etc. And as i had guessed, he rejected.

"Can you just go straight pull out this tooth?"

"You are so lousy. My previous dentist always pull out my teeth without this and that procedures."

"I'm very healthy! Can you see that? Never have headache, high blood pressure, high blood sugar."

"CAN YOU JUST PULL OUT THIS D*MN TOOTH OUT ???"

Telling you the truth,  some practical-mind-concept of asians is the worst thing that you can see if you do dental practice in south east asia. They dont mind -and even suggest you - to skip all the standard procedures and go straight the point. Some patients will bring their chipped tooth and ask you to GLUE it back. And theyre really mean it. I know that patients are our customers. But hey, who is the dentist here? I have the knowledge. But it will be complicated if you meet some kind of stubborn chinese patients. They will shit your knowledge and want everything to meet their demand.

And even worse if your appearance is young. Or younger than them.

I didnt argue more. I asked my nurse to check on his blood pressure. And its turned out he got 220/150 mmHg.

Great! Once i put injection, he can be either get shocked or stroke.

"You see doc, Im very healthy. Never been sick. Never taken any medicine. And im drinking beer. So what ????"

I am fully understand that this kind of people always feel healthy. How do they know? They have never checked it up before. Once i told him that he got a high blood pressure, he didnt even get scared or what.

"Oh i don't believe that. I never had a high blood pressure. I even never had a headache!"

In end I postponed the extraction and asked him to take the HBP medicament before proceeding the extraction. And newest info I got from my nurse, he cancel our next week appointment because he had extracted that tooth by HIMSELF last night.

a life-changing smile

This can be the reason of why i love my invisalign treatment so much ! The closing-bite is perfect! And before i am having my mid course correction, I put no class 2 elastics for my own case. Which means that all the aligners were well-tracked !

I really love my bite now. Plan to put class 2 elastics on my MCC, and cant wait for the result. Guess what? This is life changing ! Well, you can invest on branded stuffs, but have you ever thought to invest on you? On your health? I meet a lot of well fashioned people, but when they smile and it looked awful, I felt so pity of them. Since i had learned a lot about facial profile and optimized occlusion,  I pay a lot of attentions to finish all of my patients cases perfectly. I will push myself into my limit and serve them my best.

And this is something that i will do til the rest of my life. I will treat everybody as if its my own teeth. And that is what im doing now...

7 months with invisalign

7 months already with invisalign !!! Can you say already that my smile has improved a lot ??

Here is the resume I wanna share with you all !
My before and progress pictures

The hard work was really paid off when I see the results now. I wish I had done this treatment earlier. I was being analyzed by other colleagues in every symposiums, in every meetings, on how bad my open bite was. And now, they saw a very good improvement from my occlusion and profile - which is great ! Thank you for keep encouraging and supporting me to treat my challenging case!

5 months with invisalign

This photo in the left was taken exactly 5 months ago when i was attending prime speak lecture in Singapore, 1 day before I started my invisalign treatment. And today, i take a selfie before work this morning. I cant believe that my new smile in progress looked very good. Even better than i had expected !!!!

I suppose to do this earlier - really !! I was so busy taking care of my patients and kept postponing my own case. Even i had sent the impression a year ago ! OMG !!!

I am still on my way to my beautiful smile. Great thing is, I did my own case in my own. Hahahaha... so great, isnt it? I have done hundred of patients to give them their beautiful smile. And now, my turn ! Thats also one advantage of being a passionate dentist : you can treat yourself ! Passionately !
